As this latest round of the Accountability group wraps up, here’s a few ideas I’m leaving everyone with about changing habits and keeping promises to yourself.  The book we’ve been working with is called “This Year I Will” and has lots of great tips for wherever you are in the change process.

Keeping Promises to Yourself:

  1. Make it non-negotiable
  2. Make it actionable
  3. Come up with solutions to your usual excuses
  4. Use procrastination to your advantage (60% of the population is pressure prompted)-use an external deadline that you can’t change
  5. Schedule it in
  6. Do it daily
  7. Monitor your behavior (track/log/write/observe)
  8. Focus on the Horizon (How much you’ve done vs. how much to do)
  9. Take it one choice at a time
  10. Find someonewho’s doing what you want and imitate them
  11. Teach it to someone else
  12. Treat Yourself Kindly
